New for fall: Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

Starting this fall, you can access Linux applications in the CAEN computer labs by using the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). This will allow you to run all the same lab software you are familiar with, without needing to wait for the computer to restart or log in to VNC. Because the computer is still running Windows, you can use both operating systems simultaneously and access your files in new ways.

Going forward, WSL should be the preferred method for running Linux applications in the CAEN Computer Labs, however Lab computers can still continue to be booted directly into Linux as an alternative.

New for this year, WSL allows CAEN to provide additional images you can use including:

  • Red Hat 8 (the Linux CLSE, with our licensed Linux engineering software)
  • Red Hat 9
  • Ubuntu 22.04
  • Ubuntu 24.04

These images have all of the OS features but only a subset of the Engineering software applications.

Refer to the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) knowledge base for more information about using this feature.
