Windows Remote Desktop Service upgraded for faster graphics
The CAEN Windows Remote Desktop Service has been upgraded to support virtualized GPUs (graphics processing units). This enables software applications that are graphically intensive (e.g. CAD, 3D Visualization…) to run faster by making use of graphics hardware located on the server.

Two software editions will be deployed to the CAEN computers beginning July 21: a “Student Instructional Edition” for students completing coursework, and a “Student Research Edition” for students performing non-commercial research. CAEN is announcing three important changes related to the CAEN Windows remote desktop service.
The CAEN Windows remote desktop service provided network access to the same Windows environment, including commercial engineering applications, that is available in CAEN’s student computing labs.
On January 3, 2014 CAEN will:
- Retire the CAEN Windows remote desktop service login
Changes to CAEN Linux Login Service on January 3, 2014
CAEN is announcing two important changes related to the CAEN Linux Login Service.
The Linux login service provided network access to the same Linux environment, including commercial engineering applications, that is available in CAEN’s student computing labs.
On January 3, 2014 CAEN will:
- Remove several of the commercial engineering applications from login.engin.umich.edu (and vnc.engin.umich.edu)
New software must be installed in order to access Windows CLSE remotely
The method for remotely accessing the CAEN Lab Software Environment (CLSE) for Windows is changing. Effective October 8, 2013, it will no longer be possible to access the 2012 CLSE via the http://www.itcs.umich.edu/sites/labs/virtual.php website. Reminder: Login shell change for CAEN Linux systems on August 26
On Monday, August 26, Bash will replace C-shell (csh) as the login command-line interpreter, or shell, on systems running CAEN’s Linux environment. Bash is the default shell for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Mac OS X systems, and CAEN is adopting this convention.
